  15. The audio doesn't seem to be working in the online session. What do I do?

  1. I can’t attend all of the live online sessions but want to register for the course. Will I be able to catch up on whatever I miss?
    • Just like in any other university-level class, we prefer that students attend and actively participate in the entire course. But, each of the live online sessions are recorded and posted on the course webpage. So, in the event that you can’t participate in a session, you’ll be able to catch up by watching the recording.
  2. How do I join the live session?
    • Start at the topic for the current week's discussion. Find the link for attending the lecture; if you join early, you will be directed to a “waiting room” and then automatically re-directed to the broadcast as soon as it begins. Also, be sure to click the audio icon (headphones) to participate in the meeting as a listener.
  3. Is the lecture recorded? How can I watch it?
    • Yes, each time the class “meets” for a live session, the lecture and Q&A discussion are recorded. You’ll find a link to the recording on the course page for each week’s lecture.
  4. How long will I have access to the courses that I attend?
    •  If you register for and attend a course, you will have access to the course page and the resources there for at least one full year from the date that you enroll.
  5. Are courses interactive? Can I ask questions during the lecture?
    • Yes. Send your questions to the course administrator in a private chat message. The speaker will answer questions at the end of the lecture.
  6. What is an “All Access Membership” for AU Online?
    • Subscribing for an All Access Membership to AU Online gives you full access to current programming and to the AU Online website for one calendar year. In addition to past courses offered through AU Online, the archive includes access to download recordings of lectures given at Acton University.
  7. How do I watch the lecture recordings posted in the Foundational Lectures course?
    • Acton’s Core Curriculum lectures are available for free to anyone who creates a profile on the AU Online website. Even though there’s no enrollment fee, you do still have to “enroll” to gain full access (just like any other course you would participate in).
  8.  What is the standard format for a course?
    • A typical course will “meet” for 60-75 minutes once per week for 4-6 weeks. The speaker will lecture for roughly 45 minutes of the weekly class period; the rest of the time will be open for Q&A. You will find resources such as lecture outlines, recommended reading lists, discussion forums (which we encourage you to use!). There will also be a short, cumulative quiz posted on the coures page to be taken after the final lecture.
  9. I thought of a few questions for the speaker but don’t want to wait for the next online meeting to ask. How can I contact him/her?
  10. I see a list of recommended reading materials. Is it mandatory that I read them before attending the lecture?
    • Unless otherwise noted, no, it is not mandatory to read the list of “Recommended Resources” prior to each lecture. The list is shared by the speaker either as an introduction to the topic before the lecture or as a starting point for your further investigation.
  11. What are the requirements for my computer so that I can participate in a course?
    • All you really need to use the Moodle-based AU Online website is a reliable internet connection and modern web browser (for example: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari). Most courses will have .pdf files available to download and recordings of the live session, so you will need a PDF reader  (you can download Adobe Reader  and install the Adobe Flash Plugin for free). To participate in the live online sessions, you will need to be equipped with: a modern web browser, reliable internet connection, and speakers or headphones.
  12. Can I use a mobile device to participate in a course?
    • The software that we use for the weekly online sessions currently supports devices that can use Flash, but isn’t compatible with Apple mobile devices (iPhone/iPad) at this time. Everything else is accessible on any mobile device that has internet capabilities. Students may use these devices to visit the course page, view and download lecture files, and complete quizzes.
  13. Can I login with my Acton University account username?
    • Maybe someday, but not yet. The Acton University website uses separate accounts from AU Online. You must create an account for both websites if you want to participate in each.
  14. Can I earn credit towards my degree by participating in an AU Online course?
    • Maybe someday, but not yet. Partnering with colleges and universities is part of our long-term goal, but we’re not quite there yet. However, we are happy to issue a certificate of completion for any of the courses you participate in. Contact the AU Online team at auonline@acton.org for further information.

  15. The audio doesn't seem to be working in the online session. What do I do?
    • First, try refreshing the browser window. If that doesn't work, click the headphones icon in the upper left of the online session window. If you still have questions, email us at webmaster@acton.org.
